Book Recommendation Robert E. Webber. The Divine Embrace: Recovering the Passionate Spiritual Life (Baker 2006).

 •   •

As part of Webber’s Ancient-Future series, Webber develops an informed understanding of spirituality that sweeps the history of the church. He shows ways in which biblical spiritualities have become captive or diluted by culture, and more importantly he develops ways in which the contemporary church, attuned to the impulses of culture, might recapture a spirituality that lives out God’s story together. Webber consistently seeks to move biblical spirituality away from an individualistic, self-centered understanding to a personal and communal sense of being embraced by God.

  1. Kurt,

I love the ancient-future series, and I look forward to reading this book that you have highlighted. Webber’s passing is quite a loss.

This creed was composed in 1960 by the Masai people of East Africa in collaboration with missionaries from the Congregation of the Holy Ghost. The creed attempts to express the essentials of the Christian faith within the Masai culture. Jaroslav Pelikan, a [...]

The Value of the Local Congregation

It is not easy to pastor a church. Eugene Peterson describes the church as mysterious and messy. The mystery of the church is often overshadowed by the messiness of the church that we encounter on a regular basis. So Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s statement in Life Together always shocks me and humbles me: Pastors should not complain about [...]
