Let us not forget the racial/religious prejudice undertones of their inquiry. This was a two way street. The feeling was mutual: Samaritans disliked (mild way of putting it) Jews and Jews disliked Samaritans. The Samaritans dismiss Jesus because of his destination, and this immediately infuriates the lightening bolt brothers. Jesus' rebuke not only applies to them, but it applies to any of us who would want to punish those who don't agree with us. For Jesus, there is no room for racism, and there is certainly no room for retaliation, hostile reactions, or beating people up (physically/verbally) for not accepting the gospel.
